2017, Ink on paper (18″ x 24″)
The Dance was inspired by the magic of opposing elements interacting harmoniously with one another.
This piece is very personal to me as it embodies the essence of all arts that I have learned and practice – natural movement, stillness, balance, transformation, and oneness. The image came to me when my martial arts school was gifted to me in 1998, though I never felt the need to manifest it until Spring 2017. This piece now resides at the altar in my dojo in Hawaii.
The symbol was created with a single brush stroke on traditional Japanese paper (washi) and celebrates the process of how all things come to be. It is intended to simultaneously be a drop of water and a single flame, though you are invited to experience the piece with the forces that resonate with you.
